I am a Port Moody native, having been born here in 1966 (well, technically born in Royal Columbian in New West because there was no hospital in Port Moody at that time!).
My grandparents originally moved to Port Moody in 1932 to a house on Clarke Street where they lived until moving to St George Street in about 1938, the house where I now live.
I was first elected to City Council in 2005, re-elected as Councillor in 2008 and elected Mayor in 2011. I generally believe that taxes should be kept at the lowest level to provide the services and amenities residents require and desire, and that local government should be responsive and communicative to the residents and taxpayers.
I am an avid user of social media and electronic communications, including my website, Twitter, Facebook, email and other emerging technologies and platforms.
I have deep roots in Port Moody, and cherish and respect the city’s history.
My grandparents were very active members of the Kyle Centre in their retirement years, and were instrumental in the building of the new centre, and the establishment of many of the still existing clubs, such as the snooker and rock and gem clubs. My grandfather used to take us carpet bowling in the "old" rec centre, and I have fond memories of our time spent there.
I graduated, in 1984 from Port Moody Senior Secondary, and went on to attend Simon Fraser University for Computing Science and later British Columbia Institute of Technology for Business Management/Accounting. I have spent most of my life involved in sailing, canoeing, kayaking activities from Rocky Point Park. My father was one of the founders of the Rocky Point Sailing Association, and worked for 20 years developing a vision for what is now the Old Mill Boathouse at Rocky Point, a facility that I use, and enjoy, regularly. My grandfather worked for several decades at the then Flavelle Cedar Mill, and my grandmother was employed with the school district as a caretaker at Moody Elementary - where my mother and uncle attended school and later, where my mother worked as a teacher. My mother also taught for many years at Pleasantside Elementary and Moody Middle.
In my spare time, although there is very little of that, I enjoy biking (mountain and road), kayaking, golfing, sailing, hiking and enjoying the many outdoor activities in Port Moody. We are so fortunate to have all that nature surrounding us and the ocean and mountains at our doorstep.
