After graduating from Port Moody Senior Secondary, I continued my studies in Computer Science at then Coquitlam College, and Simon Fraser University. I later attended BCIT for Business Management and Sales/Marketing. I have been a Certified Microsoft Professional for 20 years specializing in database management and web programming. I have taken advantage of various education opportunities over my working career, including many accounting and management classes at tech/trade schools, and online/distance learning of web/application development.
In my early work life, during high school and college, I worked for Petro Canada Coal Harbour and North Arm at the retail/wholesale marine sales outlets. I was fortunate to be exposed to many different aspects of the business, including accounting, payroll, purchasing and sales. After university, I went on to work for an International Marine Shipping Agent, representing Weyerhauser and China Ocean Shipping (the world's largest shipping company). I was promoted through the organization from a data entry/IT position to Manager of Canadian Intermodal and Equipment/Operations and Manager of Customer Service. I had responsibility for hundreds of millions of dollars assets and offices across the country. I had an incredible exposure to the emerging Chinese trade with Canada, working first hand with importers and exporters and both Governments. I left the shipping agent for an opportunity to be a managing partner / owner of a transportation/warehousing company. Starting from a 20,000 sq foot warehouse and 8 employees, my partners and I grew the company to over 2 million square feet, over 100 employees and led a merger with the largest distribution company in BC. After completing the transition to the new ownership, I decided to return to my roots as a software programmer, and started my own company developing applications for transportation, customs brokerage and warehousing companies. It was an exciting time in the transportation software industry and I was able to help many businesses transform their operations to online services and implement electronic data interchange solutions with trading partners. I was also very busy helping small businesses transition to the new 'online' world, helping them get connected to email, and develop websites.
With the emergence, then explosion, of the internet, I focused my energy on developing web based applications - allowing companies to open up their processes to their customers, vendors and trading partners via the world wide web. This involved not only software development, but business process development and work flow management and I had and continue to have many successes helping businesses 'embrace the cloud'...
I have seen firsthand the amazing impact that dedicated Volunteers can make. I am and have been personally involved as a community volunteer in a large number of social service, environmental, business and community organizations including; Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation, Crossroads Hospice, Share Society, Operation Red Nose, Rocky Point Sailing, Port Moody Canoe and Kayak, Suburban Rush, and several others. I am also now in my fifth year as the Port Moody Terry Fox Run organizer, something I am incredibly honoured to do and which i am deeply dedicated to.
In addition to my many years of participation in the community prior to being elected in 2005, I have worked on many civic committees and task forces throughout my last 3 terms on Council. I’ve also been a proud member of many sports, social and service clubs throughout the years.
